Thermal analysis has wide range applications to understand thermophysical and chemical changes at a macro-molecular level. Accurate qualitative and quantitative analysis of evolved gaseous compounds strongly depends on the methodology used. In this point of view, the author has developed a desirable simultaneous coupling techniques involving thermal analysis and evolved gas analysis consists of TG-DTA where a material is subjected to a controlled temperature program allowing thermal degradation; and high sensitive gas analyzer of a mass spectrometry (MS) or Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). In-situ visual sample observation analysis that integrates the optical microscope with the TG-DTA or DSC to observe the materials during thermal measurements is useful to reveal changes directly in sample shape, size, color and other properties, and also to help the interpretation of an accurate thermal or physical transformation. The optical images can be automatically linked to the TA data as well as temperatures. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed unique multimodal techniques and methods, results of the application to materials will be presented and discussed. Dr. Tadashi Arii, Ph.D, now is a Senior Scientist, Thermal Analysis Division, Rigaku Corporation and an Adjunct Lecturer of Tokyo Institute of Technology. He got his B.Eng. in Chemistry and Ph.D in Energy and Environment Science at Nagaoka University of Technology, Japan. He got a Lecture Award from “The Chemical Society of Japan (CSJ)” in 1996 and a Research Award from “The Mass Spectrometry Society of Japan (MSSJ)” in 2007, respectively. Currently his researches focus on the thermo-analytical technique and multimodal methodology based on "Simultaneous" and "Combination" to approach the fields of various materials such as chemicals, polymers, pharmaceuticals, catalysts and ceramics, etc. Title : : Speaker Profile RGS CORPORATION SDN BHD Company : Dr. Tadashi Arii SENIOR SCIENTIST THERMAL ANALYSIS DIVISION, RIGAKU CORPORATION, JAPAN 16:10 - 16:55 Automated BOD and COD analysis with Robotic Analyzer Skalar is a Dutch company, established in 1965 as a manufacturer of automated chemistry analyser for environmental, pharmaceutical, agriculture, food, etc. Skalar Robotic Analyzer offers dedicated and flexible automation solutions for routine analytical testing. This increased complexity warrants dedicated measuring equipment. In this talk we will demonstrate the applications of our existing Convection temperature devices in conjunction with a MCR Rheometer and newly built powder shear cell to explore the temperature dependence of several industrially relevant powders in both the elevated temperature (up to 600°C) as well as under the application of high amounts of moisture in the air. The focus will be on the packaging and storage behaviour of inorganic raw materials such as cement and TiO2. Both exhibit particular process difficulties in packaging where, when cooling off from elevated temperatures during production and elevated moisture content their flow behaviour and therefore the way they need to be handled in storage and filling is significantly changed. Finally the influence of combined moisture/temperature application on the storage and therefore the caking of cement and the subsequent silo discharge is discussed. Timothy Aschl holds a PhD in chemistry from the École Polytechnique, France, and a Master’s degree in applied physics from the Technical University of Graz, Austria. His research was focused on biosensors and biofuels. Timothy joined Anton Paar as a global product manager for powder rheology, and in this role he is a frequent speaker at seminars and training courses for companies and universities for a wide range of branches and industries around the world.
